- The 19th century (1801-1900) was a period in history marked by the collapse of the Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Holy Roman and Mughal empires. This paved the way for the growing influence of the British Empire, the German Empire and the United states.
- Italian, Spanish (perhaps still led by Christopher Columbus. Spain was one of the strongest countries in Europe during the centuries AD)
- Russian (Have long had issues with the Finnish who weren't part of Viking Scandinavia, but have been oppressed by the Russians for a long stretch of time.)
- Dutch (another leading country in Europe during the centuries after Christ)
- German (was also becoming a stronger empire)
I think the idea of using a Russian based race would be very interesting. They are such a big country, maybe they could have been the dominating European country in my history, rather than the English. Their design is unique and they could have a lot of interesting reasons to have wanted to expand to America, perhaps take over Scandinavia etc. A lot of reason to be the enemies of the Vikings.
I don't really necessarily want to identify my group of enemies as a specific race - maybe this detail could be left ambiguous - like in the novel series "Tomorrow When The War Began" by John Marsden where you have a lot of hints of who the enemy is (through their design, their language, their rituals etc), but they are never properly identified as any specific race.
Rather it could be a classic case of BLUE vs RED - the enemy race is just known as "the enemy". Through their design and way of life one could bring out specifically Russian influence. This could also help when recreating European history - I don't have to be as specific or exact about the details of this group of people. They could be based on a group but i would have complete creative control otherwise.
So yes, a Russian based RED group are to be my enemies!
